Sunrise BBQ and Dive – a MAS and Spartan SCUBA Event

Welcome to the Sunrise BBQ and Dive event, hosted by the Maritime Archeological Society and Spartan SCUBA, where you’ll have an unforgettable experience!

When: Saturday, August 1st | Operations Commence: 0800 – 1400

Where: Sunrise Resort on Hood Canal (Hoodsport, WA)

🔍 The Mission: Actual Wrecks & Artifacts

During the Sunrise BBQ and dive event, we will be leveling up from our last session! It’s time to take those baseline offset and trilateration skills out of the “practice zone” and apply them to actual underwater boats and artifacts.

Join us at the Sunrise BBQ and Dive for an incredible day filled with adventure and learning.

• The Twist: We are adding an underwater photography challenge this time. You’ll be tasked with capturing clear, identifiable documentation of your “archaeological finds” under real-world conditions.
• Non-Divers & Surface Crew Welcome! This isn’t just for those getting wet. We need surface support, shore-based data logging, and folks to help coordinate artifact sketches as teams exit the water. Come hang out, learn the process, and see how a mission comes together!

📋 In-Water Skills Assessment: “Right-Seating” the Team

Doc will be in the water running casual dive skills evaluations. Don’t sweat this—there is zero “pass or fail” here.

We will be looking at diver trim, buoyancy, communication, and team awareness. The goal is purely Mission Classification. For example:

• Divers with precision buoyancy might lead the close-up measurement team.
• Divers with sharp situational awareness and solid communication might anchor our underwater photography and documentation crew.

It’s all about figuring out where your unique strengths best serve the mission when we deploy on a real wreck or artifact mission.

🏛️ About the Maritime Archaeological Society (MAS)

If you aren’t familiar with MAS, they are a fantastic non-profit dedicated to discovering, documenting, and conserving shipwrecks and submerged cultural resources right here in the Pacific Northwest. From archival research and beach surveys to technical underwater mapping, they bridge the gap between history and active exploration. The staff at the resort are incredibly excited to host the Sunrise BBQ and Dive, making it a memorable occasion for all participants.

✍️ A Note on Training & Commitment

We have a phenomenal roster of interested divers for this event, and we are excited to get to work. To show your commitment to this project and to start the next level of training with the dive team, there is one small but important prerequisite: all participants must be registered members of MAS.

Membership directly supports the preservation of local maritime history and ensures we are all aligned as we move forward into advanced training pipelines. You can get registered in just a few minutes through the MAS Membership Page.

If you haven’t dived the Sunrise Resort underwater park yet, you are missing out on one of the premier cold-water training setups in the Pacific Northwest. Shawn and Diana have poured incredible effort into making this park a dynamic, thriving underwater ecosystem and an unparalleled training ground.

From deliberate structural attractions to the natural marine life that calls Hood Canal home, there is a reason Spartan SCUBA has planted its flag here as official stewards and developers of the park. 🪵 Experience the Sunrise Resort Perks!

The Sunrise BBQ and Dive event is also a perfect opportunity to establish your own relationship with the resort owners and get used to top-tier shore diving amenities. They are close to being fully rebuilt, and the facilities are looking incredible. Aside from the world-class dive park right off the shore, standard amenities for our event day include:

• Dedicated Gear Rinse Station: Clean off the salt kit right by the water without the usual gravel-parking-lot scramble.
• The Post-Dive Hot Tub: The absolute best way to thaw out your core and talk story after a productive cold-water mission.
• On-Site Cylinder Fills: No need to haul half a dozen tanks. Keep your steel and aluminum topped off right at the resort for just $10 + tax.

🌭 The Shindig: Spartan SCUBA & White’s Meats Wiener Roast

Once operations conclude, it’s time to enjoy the BBQ portion of the Sunrise BBQ and Dive!

• Provided: White’s Country Meats is supplying a premium sausage and brat-fest, hosted alongside Spartan SCUBA.
• Refreshments: Spartan SCUBA is providing water and sparkling N/A beverages on site.
• Potluck Style: Everyone is encouraged to bring a shareable side dish, salad, or dessert, plus any personal preferred snacks or drinks.

⚙️ Logistics, Rentals, & Fees

• Day-Use/Splash Fees: There is usually a $20 per-person resort day-use fee for the park. However, a generous, anonymous, benefactor has taken care of this for our group! Your $20 fee can stay firmly planted in your pocket.
• Gear & Cylinder Rentals: If you need tanks or gear, early communication is vital. Please lock in your rental requests with Spartan SCUBA no later than Thursday, July 30th so we can have everything staged and ready.
