There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the tide meets the towering evergreens of the Olympic Peninsula. It’s a place where the water is emerald, the wildlife is legendary, and the community is unbreakable. This May, Spartan SCUBA & Dive Team is returning to one of our favorite haunts for a massive hood canal dive weekend at the Sunrise Resort.

Whether you are a newly minted Open Water diver or a seasoned technical veteran, this weekend is designed for you. We are inviting divers of all levels to join us for four days of exploration, skill-building, and high-octane fun in the heart of the Pacific Northwest.

The Itinerary: Training, Trails, and Tides

We’ve structured this hood canal dive weekend to offer the perfect balance of work and play. Please take note of the schedule so you can plan your transit from Gresham or beyond:

• Friday, May 29 (Arrival & Fun Diving): We kick things off with pure recreation. Friday is “Fun Diving Only”—the perfect time to check your buoyancy, dial in your trim, and get reacquainted with the local residents.

• Saturday & Sunday, May 30–31 (The Training Core): For those looking to level up, these are the days. We will be conducting on-site training. If you are aiming for a new certification or sharpening your specialties, this is where the heavy lifting happens.

• Monday, June 1 (The Farewell Fin-Kick): We wrap up the holiday weekend with more fun diving. It’s a final chance to visit your favorite reefs or hit that one spot you missed over the weekend before we dry out the gear for the drive home.

Mastery of the Emerald Depths

Let’s talk about the conditions. Diving in the Canal is an authentic PNW experience. You can expect some of that classic, “challenging” visibility. To the uninitiated, it might look like pea soup; to a Spartan, it looks like an opportunity.

We believe that low-viz doesn’t stop a dive—it defines a diver. It takes a truly gifted navigator to “see” the objective through the silt and the shadows. This hood canal dive weekend is the perfect environment to hone that sixth sense, relying on your compass, your buddy, and your training to find the treasures hidden in the emerald gloom.

Stewardship: Diving with a Purpose

At Spartan SCUBA, we don’t just use the water; we protect it. We are the proud stewards of this underwater park, and this weekend includes some “dirty work” to keep the site pristine for the next generation. Our leadership team will be:

• Laying new lines to improve site navigation.

• Setting new underwater features to enhance the diver experience.

• Performing routine “housekeeping” on our local icons.

Speaking of icons, we will be doing a deep clean of the legendary Skelepotty at the “Gang of Thrones.” If you haven’t seen it yet, let’s just say it’s a site highlight—IYKYK! Helping with park maintenance is a great way to learn the layout of the site while giving back to the community that hosts us.

Logistics, Lodging, and Gear

This is a “choose your own adventure” style event. You can join us for a single day use (at just $20 + tax) or stay for the full four-day haul.

• Lodging: We highly encourage you to stay on-site to soak up the full experience. Rooms are available directly through the Sunrise Resort.

• The Spartan Mini-Dorm: For those looking for the “inner circle” experience, we have limited space available in our mini-dorm alongside the Spartan leadership team. Check the ticket prices below for availability—choose your night(s) and add to cart. These spots go fast!

• Fuel for the Dive: Cylinder fills are available right on-site for $10 + tax.

• Provisions: Unless specifically stipulated on your purchase, food and lodging are not included. Luckily, the local grocery store and several great restaurants are just a short drive away.

We have to give a massive shout-out to our hosts. The Sunrise Resort is currently undergoing a Herculean effort to remodel and rebuild. They aren’t just slapping on a coat of paint; they are rebuilding this sanctuary to last for at least another 100 years of diving history.
