SUMMARY:Clark County SAR Training - Mastering the Lift
DESCRIPTION:Mastering the Lift: SAR Training (Search and Recovery) & Buoyancy Training\nDate: Saturday\, May 16th \nTime: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM \nLocation: Speelyai Bay Park\, Ariel\, WA \nCost: Free (Excluding $4 park entry fee) \n\nUnlock a Rare and Critical Diving Skill\nWhether you are looking to master the precision of technical diving or understand the high-stakes environment of Search and Recovery (SAR)\, proficiency with a lift bag is a fundamental skill rarely taught in standard curricula. \nOn Saturday\, May 16th\, join us at Speelyai Bay Park for a comprehensive workshop dedicated to the art and science of underwater lift bags and large Delayed Surface Marker Buoys (DSMBs). While this session is conducted primarily for the Clark County Sheriff’s Office Search and Recovery (CCSOSAR) Dive Team\, we are opening participation to certified divers in our community who wish to sharpen their technical proficiency. \nWhat You Will Learn\nThis workshop bridges the gap between recreational diving and professional recovery tactics. We will cover: \n\nThe Mechanics of Lift: Safely rigging and moving submerged objects or evidence.\nRedundant Buoyancy: Using a lift bag or DSMB as a critical backup in the event of a primary BCD failure.\nProfessional SAR Tactics: Insights into how teams manage victim and evidence recovery.\nDeployment Mastery: Practice individual and team-based deployments to manage larger\, more complex lifts.\n\nExpert-Led Instruction\nThe session is led by an ERDI Instructor Trainer with 30 years of medical experience and a history in public safety diving. Having conducted Emergency Response Diver training for both the Multnomah County and Clark County Sheriff’s Offices\, your instructor provides training rooted in real-world recovery operations and rigorous safety standards. \nPrerequisites & Safety\nBecause this is an active lake with boat traffic and specialized tasks\, participants should meet the following criteria: \n\nExperience: Divers should have a solid foundation in buoyancy control and feel comfortable maintaining trim while performing tasks.\nThermal Protection: Water temperatures at Speelyai can reach as low as 48°F\, though they typically range between 50–55°F this time of year. Dry suits with appropriate thermal undergarments are highly recommended for comfort during these relatively static skills. A farmer John/Jane wetsuit with 14mm double core\, or 7mm semi-dry suit could be acceptable alternatives: you will be chilly\, but not frozen!\nHydration: We emphasize hydration as a best practice for all divers; please bring plenty of water and a lunch/snack.\n\nLogistics & Gear\nWe will begin the morning with a Land Drill and Safety Briefing at the park tables before entering the water. This allows us to master rigging and venting mechanics before dealing with the thermal and buoyancy variables of the lake. \n\nGear: Bring your full SCUBA kit. Bringing your own lift bags (50lb+ recommended) or large DSMBs and dedicated reels/spools is highly encouraged\, though not required.\nWaivers: All participants (excluding active SAR members) must sign a participation waiver for Spartan SCUBA. Please complete the fillable PDF here: ERDi General Liability Waiver – Lift Bagging. Instructor is “Dr. Eric Strand #28748”; facility is “Spartan SCUBA”; training agency is “ERDI”.\nShore Access: We will be staged at the park tables\, which offer excellent shore access to the dive site.\n\nChecklist for the Day:\n\n[ ] Certification Card\n[ ] Full SCUBA kit (Weights and tanks included)\n[ ] Lift Bag/DSMB & Reel (If owned)\n[ ] Signed Spartan SCUBA Waiver\n[ ] $4 Park Entry Fee\n[ ] Lunch and Water\n\nThis is the only time this course will be offered this year. To confirm your attendance\, please register below to confirm participation. We look forward to seeing you at the water’s edge at 9:00 AM! \nPlease note: this is a non-certification course. It is part of ERDI training at Diver 1 and 2 levels\, and is more advanced than what is taught in Sport or Technical Recreational SCUBA diving.

SUMMARY:Spartan SCUBA and MAS Re-Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Dive Into History! 🌊 Spartan SCUBA & MAS Event – Our Re-Launch at Speelyai Bay \nAre you ready to turn your next dive into a journey through time? Whether you are a seasoned technical diver\, a newly certified open-water enthusiast\, or someone who has been out of the water for far too long\, it is time to dust off your fins and clear your mask. We are thrilled to announce a landmark collaboration event between Spartan SCUBA & Dive Team and the Maritime Archaeological Society (MAS)! \nThis isn’t just another day at the lake; it is the official “re-firing” of the MAS diving engine. We are bringing the heat\, the history\, and the hamburgers to the beautiful Speelyai Bay Park in Ariel\, Washington\, and we want you to be part of this new chapter. \nThe Vision: Science Meets SCUBA\nFor years\, MAS has been a cornerstone for preserving our submerged cultural heritage. Now\, we are entering the rebuilding era of exploration. We are proud to announce that Dr. Eric “Doc” Strand\, the lead instructor for Spartan SCUBA\, has officially taken on the mantle of Dive Safety Officer (DSO) for MAS. \nDoc’s mission is simple: get divers back in the water\, get them trained\, and get them excited about the incredible field of Underwater Archaeology. We believe that every diver has the potential to be a citizen scientist. This event is the first step in rebuilding our dive activities and fostering a community of divers who want their bottom time to mean something more. \nThe Mission Briefing: What to Expect\nWe’ve planned a day that perfectly balances education\, exploration\, and community. \n\nArrival & Setup (8:00 AM): The Spartan SCUBA team will be on-site early to secure our staging area. Look for the Spartan canopy! We’ll have two griddles ready to go for later\, but we recommend you get there early to claim a prime parking spot and gear-up space.\nArchaeology 101 (10:00 AM): We kick things off with a group class on the basics of underwater archaeology. Learn how to “see” a site\, identify potential artifacts\, and understand the ethics of preservation.\nDive 1 – The “Fun” Dive (11:00 AM): We hit the water! This is a low-pressure dive to get weighted correctly\, check your buoyancy\, and simply enjoy the underwater topography of Speelyai Bay.\nDive 2 – Hands-On Archaeology (Afternoon): For those who want to get their hands (metaphorically) dirty\, the second dive is all about the tools of the trade. We will be practicing underwater measurement techniques—a vital skill for any aspiring maritime archaeologist.\nThe BBQ & Potluck: Once the tanks are dry\, the griddles get hot! We’re hosting a BBQ/Picnic to celebrate the day. It’s a time to swap stories\, talk gear\, and discuss upcoming MAS projects.\n\nLocation & Logistics of the Spartan SCUBA MAS Event\n\nWhere: Speelyai Bay Park\, Ariel\, Washington.\nWhen: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Arrive early!)\nCost: There is a $4 entry fee to the park.\nFood: this is a BYOF and BYOB potluck event – please bring something for yourself and something to share!\nWaivers: All divers must sign waivers upon arrival. Safety is our priority!\n\nWhy Underwater Archaeology?\nIf you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a “Time Traveler with a Tank\,” you need to check out Doc’s latest article: The SCUBA Time Machine. In it\, he explores how diving allows us to touch history in a way no other hobby can. \nMaritime archaeology isn’t just for Ph.D.s; it’s for anyone with a sense of adventure and a respect for the past. Whether we are mapping a 19th-century shipwreck or identifying submerged structures\, the thrill of discovery is universal. We are rebuilding the Maritime Archaeologist Society dive team from the ground up\, and we need your energy and your eyes underwater. \nRSVP Information\nWe need an accurate headcount for the griddles and the logbooks! Please RSVP with the following: \n\nTotal number of people in your party.\nTotal number of people who will be diving.\n\nLet’s get the fire going! We are building a community of explorers\, and it starts with this splash at Speelyai. Whether you want to become a certified archaeological diver or you just want to hang out with a great group of people and learn something new\, we can’t wait to see you there. \nLet’s go find some history! \n\n*** Please Note***\nYou must be a registered user and actual human in order to RSVP for this event. Please follow this link to request site access. Once approved you will be able to continue the RSVP process.

SUMMARY:SCUBA Dive Hood Canal: Friday Fun Day at Sunrise Dive Park
DESCRIPTION:Ditch the Desk and Dive: SCUBA Dive Hood Canal Friday Escape\nForget the Monday blues—we’re trading the end-of-the-week grind for a Friday morning descent! On Friday\, May 22nd\, Spartan Scuba is heading back to our favorite PNW liquid playground: Sunrise Dive Park. \nAfter our recent adventures in Cozumel\, there is no better way to recalibrate than by sinking into the crisp\, emerald waters of the Hood Canal. This isn’t a classroom session or a guided tour; it’s a pure “just for the fun of it” dive day. We’re swapping the tropical salt for the moody\, majestic beauty of our local backyard. \nWe’ll be rolling out from the shop at 04:45 AM sharp. Yes\, it’s early\, but the sunrise views and the mandatory breakfast stop make it more than worth the wake-up call. We aim to be on-site by 07:45 AM\, ready to squeeze in four solid dives before the afternoon hits. Sunrise Dive Park makes it easy with top-tier amenities: on-site air fills\, a dedicated rinse station\, and—the real hero of the day—a functional hot tub for that post-dive thaw. \nWe plan to wrap up the underwater action between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM. This perfectly positions us for our traditional pit stop at Casa Ramos in Centralia for a well-earned mid-trip feast. Expect to be back at the shop around 5:00 PM or 6:00 PM\, just in time to kick off your Memorial Day weekend right. \nThe Logistics: \n\nDay Use Fee: $20 + tax per person.\nCylinder Fills: $10 + tax on-site.\nRide Sharing: Want to carpool? Let us know in the RSVP and we’ll help connect you with a buddy.\n\nReady to splash? Click here for the resort website or Check out our Sunrise page.

SUMMARY:Hood Canal Dive Weekend\, May 29 – June 1\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join the Spartan SCUBA & Dive Team for the Ultimate Hood Canal Dive Weekend!\nMay 29 – June 1\, 2026 | Sunrise Resort\, Hood Canal\nThere is a specific kind of magic that happens when the tide meets the towering evergreens of the Olympic Peninsula. It’s a place where the water is emerald\, the wildlife is legendary\, and the community is unbreakable. This May\, Spartan SCUBA & Dive Team is returning to one of our favorite haunts for a massive hood canal dive weekend at the Sunrise Resort. \nWhether you are a newly minted Open Water diver or a seasoned technical veteran\, this weekend is designed for you. We are inviting divers of all levels to join us for four days of exploration\, skill-building\, and high-octane fun in the heart of the Pacific Northwest. \n\nThe Itinerary: Training\, Trails\, and Tides\nWe’ve structured this hood canal dive weekend to offer the perfect balance of work and play. Please take note of the schedule so you can plan your transit from Gresham or beyond: \n\n\nFriday\, May 29 (Arrival & Fun Diving): We kick things off with pure recreation. Friday is “Fun Diving Only”—the perfect time to check your buoyancy\, dial in your trim\, and get reacquainted with the local residents. \n\n\nSaturday & Sunday\, May 30–31 (The Training Core): For those looking to level up\, these are the days. We will be conducting on-site training. If you are aiming for a new certification or sharpening your specialties\, this is where the heavy lifting happens. \n\n\nMonday\, June 1 (The Farewell Fin-Kick): We wrap up the holiday weekend with more fun diving. It’s a final chance to visit your favorite reefs or hit that one spot you missed over the weekend before we dry out the gear for the drive home. \n\n\nMastery of the Emerald Depths\nLet’s talk about the conditions. Diving in the Canal is an authentic PNW experience. You can expect some of that classic\, “challenging” visibility. To the uninitiated\, it might look like pea soup; to a Spartan\, it looks like an opportunity. \nWe believe that low-viz doesn’t stop a dive—it defines a diver. It takes a truly gifted navigator to “see” the objective through the silt and the shadows. This hood canal dive weekend is the perfect environment to hone that sixth sense\, relying on your compass\, your buddy\, and your training to find the treasures hidden in the emerald gloom. \nStewardship: Diving with a Purpose\nAt Spartan SCUBA\, we don’t just use the water; we protect it. We are the proud stewards of this underwater park\, and this weekend includes some “dirty work” to keep the site pristine for the next generation. Our leadership team will be: \n\n\nLaying new lines to improve site navigation. \n\n\nSetting new underwater features to enhance the diver experience. \n\n\nPerforming routine “housekeeping” on our local icons. \n\n\n \nSpeaking of icons\, we will be doing a deep clean of the legendary Skelepotty at the “Gang of Thrones.” If you haven’t seen it yet\, let’s just say it’s a site highlight—IYKYK! Helping with park maintenance is a great way to learn the layout of the site while giving back to the community that hosts us. \n\nLogistics\, Lodging\, and Gear\nThis is a “choose your own adventure” style event. You can join us for a single day use (at just $20 + tax) or stay for the full four-day haul. \n\n\nLodging: We highly encourage you to stay on-site to soak up the full experience. Rooms are available directly through the Sunrise Resort. \n\n\nThe Spartan Mini-Dorm: For those looking for the “inner circle” experience\, we have limited space available in our mini-dorm alongside the Spartan leadership team. Check the ticket prices below for availability—choose your night(s) and add to cart. These spots go fast! \n\n\nFuel for the Dive: Cylinder fills are available right on-site for $10 + tax. \n\n\nProvisions: Unless specifically stipulated on your purchase\, food and lodging are not included. Luckily\, the local grocery store and several great restaurants are just a short drive away. \n\n\nA Century of Diving Excellence\nWe have to give a massive shout-out to our hosts. The Sunrise Resort is currently undergoing a Herculean effort to remodel and rebuild. They aren’t just slapping on a coat of paint; they are rebuilding this sanctuary to last for at least another 100 years of diving history. When you join our hood canal dive weekend\, you are supporting a business that is literally laying the foundation for the future of our sport. \nWhy We Dive Here\nWe dive the Canal for the giant Pacific octopuses hiding in the rock piles. We dive it for the wolf eels\, the cloud sponges\, and the sheer rush of the cold-water current. But mostly\, we dive it for the people. Diving with the Spartan Dive Team means diving with a family that values safety\, skill\, and a good laugh at the end of the day. \nReady to get wet? Check the ticket options below and secure your spot for the best hood canal dive weekend of the year!
